Mahjong with Xiao Han

Xiao Han is a multidisciplinary artist and curator from Wuhan, China. Based in the 6 Territory, the traditional land of Indigenous and Metis, Han's creative practice focuses on photography, lens-based performance, visualizing emotion, and community engagement. Han's research explores diaspora identity, contemporary gender issues, and the relationship between humans, the environment, and the indigenous land. Through visual art and curatorial practice, Han produced numerous projects investigating the Chinese-Canadian restaurant history, the identity of home, and the aesthetic of community relationships.

Thanks to funding from SK Arts, Xiao is partnering with the Wynyard and District Museum committee on a public art project exploring the story of Chinese Families who operated cafe's in Wynyard in the 1920s and beyond.

With this workshop Xiao aims engage with Wynyard citizens through learning and playing Mahjong, a traditional Chinese game.  Through conversation and play the artist and citizens will learn more about each other, and the community.

How can I get involved?

The World in Wynyard is our first attempt at a multicultural event of this scale, and we recognize that not all of the many cultures of Wynyard's citizens are represented here this year.  We hope that this will become an annual event that grows and changes as more folks get involved.
